Mamoru and Motoki
Anime: they were best friends
Manga: Mamoru kills Motoki's best friend and brainwashes him to believe that he is his best friend
A topic of Sensuality
So often Mamoru plays the role of 'insensitive jerk,' especially in the anime. I think it's ludicrous. I see Mamoru as a type of person that observes in the background. He's aware of everything that's happening around him, but that doesn't mean he knows what to do about it, especially if has to deals with someone else's feelings. He himself has problems dealing with his own, so how do you suppose he'll go about another human being?

Anime Mamoru Defense
I'm writing this because I think Seiya is a BETTER PERSON then Mamoru. Now remember, the following opinions are mine. Which means that there is a big chance you don't agree with them. If you know you're not going to then leave right now because I don't want stupid thick-brained people to flame me screaming and shouting that Mamoru is wonderful. I don't think he is. That's my opinion. Live with it.
I'm writing this because I think I am a BETTER PERSON than YOU. Now remember, this is only my opinion and that means there's a big chance that you may not agree with them. If you can't handle that, that's too bad because I don't give a shit. Feel free to put your thick-brain to use by flaming me screaming and shouting that Mamoru sucks. I think you're a fool. That's my opinion. Live with it.
Mamoru, to me, seems cold and less loving towards Usagi in both the Anime and the Manga- actually more in the anime then anything. Seiya actually shows that she loves Usagi way more than Mamoru ever did.
To you? Just because YOU THINK Mamoru seems cold and less loving towards Usagi means that Mamoru IS cold and less loving?
Well, besides for the fact that Usagi is constantly clinging onto Mamoru. That sorta gives it away right there. But you don't see Mamoru clinging onto her, do you? No. He's probably thinking, "God, she is sooo clingy! I wish she would get off me!!" Yup. Most likely that's what he's thinking...you just get this "I'm only with her because I have to be" energy radiating off him.
Totally. Juggling dishes, catering to ungrateful, stuck-up, high class old people at some fancy restraurant only to clear his wallet at a boutique so that Usagi can wrap a dish rag around herself for other guys to drool over JUST so that she would smile for him. He risks his manhood by talking to another female -- and Rei at that -- because Usagi happened to slap him in public because she thought he forgot the birthday that she never told him about so that he could make up for the horrible crime by empyting wallet once again to buy her a pair of glass slippers. This egolistic, introverted, insensitive, teenage guy clinged the air and pretended to kiss Usagi out in public while said girlfriend was on an arm chair drooling over some hot dentist all because it's destiny. This same bastard CRIED when he was forced to break up with him because he never wanted to be with her in the first place. Fisheye and Saori both backed off Mamoru after getting the "I'm only with her because I have to be" energy from him; the "the smile he has when he's around you" and "I can't compete with the Champion of Justice" thing was obvisouly one of those animation mistakes. And the reason he brought her to a abandoned house full of kittens was because he wanted to show her how he beats them. It's a warning to Usagi to not be so clingy and cute. There's also a perfectly legitament reason behind the creation of the Spiral Moon Heart Scepter; it was prebought from Irwins. Tuxedo Kamen hid it under his cape all this time. Never was it an indication of their love.
Seiya was trying to help her. Seiya jumps infront of Sailormoon's way numerous times. Once, she even gets injured so badly that she faints while she's doing a concert.
Yes, and Mamoru hasn't. She faints. Mamoru gets frozen, drained by a tree, trapped in an elevator, maimed by various sharp objects, killed, brainwashed and killed again.
How many times does Usagi have to protect him?! I mean, he has his wonderful rose and all, which has stopped some ball of negative energy from hitting Sailormoon numerous times, but that's all he has. A rose. And a dumb speech. Oh, yes Mamoru! You've got the right idea! Bore the youma to death! Oh, and forgive me, I've forgotten his wonderful cane of life that can stretch out and poke people.
If it weren't for his roses, Usagi would have died in the first episode. Then Sailor Moon would have only lasted for that one episode. And assuming that the story continued without Sailor Moon, the earth would have been doen for. Seiya would have never met Usagi. There would have been no story. I woudln't be arguing right now.
Now Seiya does throw her rose down in one episode to stop Tin Nyanko from hurting Usagi, but...Seiya's looks just cool doing that ^^ I mean, how many times have you seen Mamoru sick in his bed while the senshi went to battle the enemy? Hmm...I can remember the R movie when Mamoru is kidnapped by Fiore.
Seiya jumps in front of Sailor Moon, gets injured and faints. Seiya 1. Mamoru 0.
Mamoru jumps in front of Sailor Mooon, gets injured, kidnapped, requires special medical care and is forced to kill his childhood friend. Seiya 2. Mamoru 0.
Your logic is, like, wow.
She takes Usagi out to the amusement park and to the disco. Now, has Mamoru ever taken Usagi to the disco? Correct me if I'm wrong, but all of their dates take place at the local park, or at his house.
You're wrong. They have been shopping, to an abandon house of cats, to some old lady's house for dinner, to the circus, to the freaking dentist, to Michiru's concert, to some old man's gall and they've seen fireworks. That's only from the top of my head. Shall I go on?
In Stars, he's killed right at the very beginning, so he's not even there. He leaves Usagi worrying about him and wondering what the hell he's doing to make him so busy he doesn't even write.
I'm sure Mamoru got killed on purpose. In fact he planned it! He never intended to study abroad. Galaxia and him were actually planning to do some disco dancing on the wing of the plane but then Galaxia went and scammed him into dying. That no-good, two-face, cheating bitch made Mamoru believed they were going to dance! Anyways, before he dies, guess what his last word was? He obviously doesn't care about Usagi.
And I've seen a lot of Sailormoon folks.
You haven't seen enough Sailor Moon if you think that roses is all he's got to offer.
In SuperS, once again, when Sailormoon and the Inners are going to battle Nehelenia, Mamoru is lying sick and dying in his bed. And during the final battle with Galaxia, Seiya wasn't sick and dying in his bed.
No, she wasn't. Mamoru called for the dying leave before Seiya got the chance. You need to make plan for these things, you know. If Seiya wanted to die so badly, she should have booked it sometime in the first four season.
In conclusion, Seiya is better...if you asked [Seiya] who she liked better, Chibi-Usa or Usagi, she'd say Usagi without even having to think. Now, Mamoru never even answers that question. We all know the answer though. Him and Chibi-Usa are having a SECRET LOVE AFFAIR! No..I'm just kidding about that part, but we all know he likes Chibi-Usa more. So Seiya rules! Mamoru sucks! So Seiya rules! Mamoru sucks!
Chibi-Usa is his fucking daughter, you imbecile. But that doesn't matter because the only relationship you can have with anyone is romantic.
----------------
I hear all these people complain that Mamoru's speeches are corny and dumb. That isn't surprising; what baffles me is that they are the same people who complains that he isn't romantic enough. Isn't the stereotypical image of romance along the lines of sprouting poetry and carrying red roses? Example: the episode with Ami and Shingo. Mamoru was too busy or something to go to the beaches with the girls. He shows up in the cave somehow and started saying things like "no matter how far we are from each other, I'll always find a way to you." Isn't that romantic?
I indentify Mamoru as a person who doesn't show his feelings easily. It seems to me that he kind've hides it until Usagi and him are all alone. The R-move being a perfect example like how he can't kiss her in public but he has no problem kissing her in the park where no one is around or how they would spend time together with Usagi doing all the talking while he reads. He would then fall a sleep, though I don't read that as insensitivity at all. For someone who has trouble opening up to people, to sleep in another person's presense, I think says a lot of their trust for that person.
Odds and Ends
--------------------------
Never has Mamoru told her to back down from her duty as sailor moon despite the danger to his or her own life.
------------------------
"IMHOI, it's not about WHY Mamoru left Usagi in R. It's HOW he did. I would be less bitter if he pulled a Kenshin Himura on Usagi, telling her straight from the beginning that he had doubts and needed to clear them. But, nope - he deemed her of being unable to handle all of that pain and just ditched her without any decent explanation.
I mean, love is TRUST. While Usagi did trust Mamoru with her own life, Mamoru did NOT. And that's why so many fans are bitter with him; they (and I also do) feel it's unfair. I myself can understand his reasons - but sheeesh, Mamoru-san, while your heart's in the right place, seems your brains are NOT. You only managed to hurt Usagi unnecessarily and put almost the whole fandom against yourself."
I agree. He doesn't know how to handle such situations, although it doesn't justify what he did. However, I don't think it's fair to undermine the pain it caused him for leaving her for it isn't any less than that of Usagi for being left.
Love is trust but let's not forget that Usagi doesn't always necessary trust Mamoru. Take the manga example where Usagi was equally jealous of Michiru as Mamoru was of Haruka. It doesn't meant that they don't trust EACH OTHER; I think it's more plausible that they don't have enough confidence in THEMSELVES, rather.
Furthermore for someone who has trouble opening up to people, to sleep in another person's presense (R movie), I think says a lot of their trust for that person.
"While Usagi did trust Mamoru with her own life, Mamoru did NOT." In saying that, isn't that what Mamoru was trying to do? Protect the life in which Usagi entrusted him with? It wasn't one nightmare for one time, it was the same nightare night after night. If you tell yourself a lie one time, one hundred time, one thousand time, sooner or later, you're going to believe it. It bears much more weight than just a one time bad dream. What's mare is that even though it wasn't apparent in the anime, Mamoru's power is psychometry. What he instinctly senses shouldn't be taken lightly. And what about the dream that drove Tuxedo Kamen to look for the silver imperium crystal? That's another factor to take into account. That said, the nightmares bear more weight still.

The Senshi are loyal to Serenity. Very loyal. I think we can just take that for a fact which spares me the trouble of having to argue this as well. The topic at hand is that Mamoru really doesn't love Usagi and he's only with her because it's destiny. Nevermind the fact that this destiny shit can be used to argue against anything include the Senshi's loyalty to Usagi and Usagi's love to Mamoru. That's not important because Mamoru sucks. Let's also throw in the Mamoru is a weak-willed bastard who is always brainwashed and has problem forgetting things so that I can kill two birds with one stone. Are you following me? Mamoru doesn't love Usagi, Mamoru weak-willed and the Senshi's loyalty to Serenity is absolute. Sailor Moon is obviously the strongest Senshi in the story and she's obviously the bravest and most determined character. Tell me now, how is it that it was the mentally (and physically if you insist) weakest, the one who cared the least about Usagi, who separated his soul to protect the princess that everyone cares so much about? He was also the only one (Usagi included) to remember the past on his own. Sure, it took him a little longer than everyone else (who only remembered because Luna used the mind-meld on him), but he did without aid.

Of the fanfictions that I've read, Mamoru angst fics usually fall into one of the two categories: usagi-mamoru-break-up-omg-zee-angst or mamoru-is-oh-so-lonely.
I'm going to dismiss the break up scenario and all the situations where it involves some kind of romance trouble altogether. This "true love" thing is already over the top. Besides, Mamoru is so much more than just Usagi's other half.
You can overkill a fanfiction with it but as long as it's well-written, I'll come back for more. (How does that work -- overkilling and being well-written at the same time? Whatever.)

As the series progressed, we saw a side of him that wasn't too sure about him. He doesn't have faith in his ability to protect Usagi. I think that he only really begin to question himself, to question if he is good enough once he met Usagi. All of a sudden, he wants to be the best that he can be, he wants to please someone, whats them to be proud of him.
