June 27th: FIN! I went back and did an aerial view, the fountain, and corrected some anatomy issues with the painting I used for the final page. That should be everything except for a proper back story so there’s no wrong interpretation! It seems like I’ve tried to incorporate every Sailor Moon fan art I’ve ever done in the past year. Please let me know if the progression of the panels don’t make sense or if I need another scene, etc.

Critiques welcomed =)

storycathedral2.jpgJune 26th: I’ve reworked the nave a bit more; painting walls and constructing arches. I think it looks a lot more substantial now and more connected to its exterior. It also allowed me to add in a few more colours to the palette. Overall, it’s closer to the image that’s in my head.

storycity.jpg The golden city! Well, the outskirts of the city anyways. The majority of the kingdom is located beyond the city wall (including the garden setting of Second Chance). You would think the castle would be located in the heart of the city, but that’s not the case. An aerial view would have been more appropriate if I had planned this better. Being the perfectionist, I’d probably go back and do a second panel. I have a much clearer idea of how the city looks now.

And yes, the kingdom has its own oasis and I’m tempted to add a fountain…

storycathedral.jpgJune 21st: I had promised gold and here it is! Aside from that, I had a slightly different picture in mind. It was suppose to be longer, higher, more elegant and full of light but given the resolution and the height:width ratio, it was hard to work in the perspective. And I didn’t paint any of the moldings; I’m debating whether or not I should go back and do it to solidify the walls. Without them, it appears as though the building is made of glass which makes it look like a fancy greenhouse. It’s a jump from the panel before it.

storyshitennou2.jpg Endymion’s guards! I’m tempted to do one final piece of Endymion for the sake of perfection… but that won’t be for a while. Doing the first stained-glass picture was fun. Doing the second one was still okay and now it’s just painful and repetitive. There was a lot of cheating involved in using the same base and sharing limbs XD See if you can spot the “similarities”.

Excluding Endymion in glass, there’s one more page to the story: the golden city.

storyshitennou.jpgJune 18th: Things are slowly coming together. Two down, and two to go.

Sketching and colouring in the blocks are relatively easy, but it’s cleaning the lineart that is killing me. I would sketch the outline, stroke the sketch to thicken it, then go in and erase the sketch marks. It’s time that I befriend the pen tool.

You only really get the general idea of the shitennou in the windows, and it doesn’t make sense to zoom in on them in the story… Bleh. BLEH, I say.

storywindow.jpg Laying out the basic design of the central windows. Aside from the rose, I’m going in blind. Perhaps I’ll work in a few more symbols, i.e. the four boxes below Forgiveness. Most of the shapes will still be stained glass whereas the border would be moldings.

I have no idea what I’m doing at the moment. It makes sense to paint this first and then shrink it to size when I paint the panel with the nave as an extension of it. There’s no point in painting the same area twice. But without laying out the nave, I don’t have a clue about the colour or the mood of the piece. I thinking that the only way to approach this is to paint both pictures simultaneously until I get a feel of the direction in which this is heading.

story.jpg June 16: I have plans to publish an a 60-page artbook by the end of this summer. I have about 50 pages that I like and averaging 1 painting/day, I only plan on cataloging the best of whatever I have by late-August. I will, however, include this 6 page story.

My goal is to finish it by the end of June, but I also have a side project that’s to be completed at the same time. I’ve done 4 sketches (none yet public), and there are 4 or 5 more ideas that I want to try out. Actually, it’s only 3 different ideas with various angles.

Back to the story: it takes place far into the future, post-Crystal Tokyo even. And for no reason other than the fact that I’m not fond of flashy technology gone wrong (like every science-fiction novel that I’ve read), civilization took a few steps backward after the fall of Crystal Tokyo. Before democracy was re-established and with no real leaders emerging, Earth finds itself war-torn once more. Of course, all the important players are reincarnated. It is only a matter of time before Endymion claims his inheritance.

scan29.jpg The concept of the cathedral was designed in 2004. Who knew it will reappear 4 years down the road?

storyforest.jpg Reworked the colouring on Forest to fit into the story although I didn’t plan on it being a panel when it was first created.

I had a blast church painting. All the textures were created using default Photoshop brushes. The brush palette is your very own genie in a lamp.
There are a few changes to the original design that came with changing the orientation from landscape to portrait. I traded in vastness of the land for heights of the heavens for one. The exterior architecture is still quite modest but interiors would be anything but.

storypanels1.jpg Beginning of the 5th segment in the outline. Zoisite needs to be reworked. He looks uncommitted and I can’t have Endymion’s guard looking bored. I’m tempted to cut and past most of what I have for Nephrite’s body and tweak to fit the remaining kings… Nephrite’s expression will need to change as well. He’s a little too cheerful. I need them all alert and fierce XD

I hate their uniforms so I’ll be taking some liberties with their colours. My cathedral will not settle for depressing windows.

The background is still in development.

Oo, an artbook? Is it going to be published and will I be able to buy a copy? I’m excited to see this progression! Be sure to keep us closely updated. :)

XD I’m not sure. My plan is to make a few copies for a few people, but if it’s decent enough to share and people are interested, I would certainly love to sell them!

Everything is looking amazing. I love the new look of the gold arch things and the painting with the guys. I can’t wait to see the finished product!

Wow, these came out so well! I love the colors and the attention to lighting in the cathedral and the window. I also really like the airy-ness of the city. Beautiful work =)
